the family...whats their problem!?

with sunlight? does it just annoy them? i cant see a reason why they cant cruise around in the daytime, it doesnt seem to actually harm them. surly robes and sunglasses would stop any irritation?!

It's the same with normal people choosing to do most activities in daylight. It's a comfort level, and that's why some people hate driving at night, or in rain. If something bothers you, how hard is it to alter your daily routine? Their eyes were bothered by direct light, and hoods and sunglasses can't block all light, and if that's the case, why not just go out when it starts getting dark?

If you've ever had an eye infection, you'd know how tough any sunlight is. It's actually painful. If this was Washington state with rain all day, they wouldn't probably have issues, but sunny California, forget it.

They were Vampires I thought.

No. The Family are the Neo-people of the novel. After the vampires

Ahh...so they are not the Nephilim? More like scabrous prophets and leper messiahs perhaps?

Looks like it's time for someone's medication...

It seemed that the very bright lights were debilitatingly painful to them. Darkness isn't painful to us, we just can't see in it. they couldn't see in the light, but it also incapacitated them. They had to stay out of the bright lights of his house at night, and daylight was a no-no.

Some people are afraid of the unknown. I don't know why, and it scares me.

The disease made them very emotional and angry, and their skin and eyes were extremely sensitive to light. That is why they became nocturnal, sleeping in the daytime in dark places underground and only coming out at night. They wore sunglasses at night because even torchlight could be painful to look at.

Made them sensitive to light AND TOTALLY WHACKED!
"Pffft, my suspension of disbelief has higher standards than that"

Many years ago I worked security and there was an old man that had to work the grave shift because he had a form of skin cancer than was very susceptible to sun light. His sores where similar to the ones on the Family's face.

The plague made them into a type of vampire, minus the attractive good looks and sex appeal. This point was clear in the book. In the film one must draw one's own conclusions about the end result of the disease.

Bored now.
