shareThe one I was considering the first was "Cotton Comes to Harlem" from 1970. I read about "Up Tight" in a book about black movies through the years. It's a remake of the John Ford movie "The Informer", the earlier film won four Oscars.

UP TIGHT isn't blaxploitation. It has a predominantly black cast, but that doesn't make it exploitation. It was directed by Jules Dassin with an artistic intent and a socio-political message. No nudity, no blood, no blaxploitation elements. It's kind of like calling SOUNDER a blaxploitation film.
