I watched the German dubbed version yesterday...


...and noticed that by about half of the German voice actors, Shaft is called "Shaved". It made me chuckle every time, it sure shows that English was a lot less predominant in the German-speaking area 38 years ago.

I'm usually against dubbing, and only watch original versions in theatres. But with films of this age, it seems like it's in itself an area worth preserving, partly because a lot of people grew up watching these versions. For example, the German dubs of the Bud Spencer and Terence Hill comedies are known to be a lot funnier and tongue-in-cheek than their originals, with many added lines. People are divided about this, some people prefer the original versions, but I'm sure they wouldn't have retained their cult following if they had been translated more closely to the original.
