Best Love Scene

I have to say that, after having seen more than a fair share of rather graphic love scenes in today's movies (believe me - I'm no prude...), the love scene at the end of the picture was one of the most intimate, tasteful and memorable I have seen. No words were spoken (none were needed!). Hermie's awkwardness played out well, as did Jennifer O'Neill's balance of her wanting to give Hermie what he has wanted all summer in balance with coping with news of her husband's tragic death. I believe I was practically holding my breath the first time I saw it.

The first time i saw the scene i was only fifteen, and I remember trembling while i watched it. That is how much of an effect it had on me.

Yes, very well done.

Yes, the 'love' scene was touching. But it wasn't a LOVE scene, at least not for Dorothy...it was a sex scene. Pure & simple, Dorothy was using Hermie for her own comfort and gave no heed to any emotional consequences for him. For Hermie, it wasn't just hormones. He had a crush on Dorothy and thought (in his youth) that he was in love with her. Dorothy might have liked the kid and found his crush amusing or touching, but her love was for her dead husband, not Hermie.

The term "love scene" is a euphemism.

the Oscy beach was the best. He was coming back to study his game plan notes. then hermie was saying something about step 12 & oscy was telling him were way past 12. Good for Oscy coming back to get another condom, i think he put that girl in the hospital.

The film is based upon the real life events that the author had during the summer of 1942. The sex scene didn't happen in real life. Yes they got into bed together, but they simply held one another throughout the night. To be honest I'd rather that they stuck with that instead of it being implied that they had sex all night. I always thought that it was strange that she hopped into bed with Hermie as soon as she found out that her husband had died. I do understand the mentality though if it had happened that way. Still, I really like this movie. The first time I saw it was when I was about 14. It aired very late one night on HBO. I have no idea what possessed me to watch it, as (at the time) it wasn't a film that I normally would have enjoyed, but it always stayed with me. Now that I'm older I can relate to it a whole lot more than I did then.

I like sex at least as much as the next guy, but in movies I'm content to know that it happened, without having to spend several minutes watching two naked people sweating, grunting, and sticking their tongues down each other's throats. Not to mention the now-ubiquitous scene where they slam each other up against the wall as soon as they get inside the door, then fall to humping on the kitchen floor. The more subtle style of older movies recognized the greater sophistication of the audience of that time.
