The Book was written in 1964 but the film was in 1971.

So was the time period 1964 or 1971?

Not specified, but it vaguely takes place in the then-present.

The movie was filmed in 1970 (August to September), and the look of the movie is definitely from that time period.

The cars, the clothes and the hairstyles all scream 1971
