Can someone please explain to me all the Grandpa Joe hate?
Is this some kind of a joke? He's, like, one of the nicest guys in the movie. What did he do to make you all hate on him?

Allow me to defend Grandpa Joe for all you haters.
He initially refuses the tobacco money, but Charlie asks him to take it.
It was a struggle for him to get out of bed, whereas in the book, he seemed to leap right out.
Grandpa Joe is a big kid at heart. He was just as excited about the prospect of touring Wonka's factory as Charlie, so he literally got carried away when he suggested trying the fizzy lifting drinks.
And of course he was willing to give Slugworth the Gobstopper after Wonka broke his promise to Charlie. You mess with Grandpa Joe's grandson, there will be hell to pay.

More likely you mess with Grandpa Joes dream of the easy life. Remember when Wonka is over the moon because Charlie gives him the EG back? He says Charlie now owns the factory and can come and live there and Joe (who 2 seconds earlier is calling Wonka a crook) says 'What about me'? Then he helps Wonka with his coat on.
Wonka shoulda done Charlie a favour and kicked the old bastard out of that elevator. share
