The Candy Man

I love the song, especially when performed by Sammy Davis Jr. However since I was little, I always felt it was a tad sinister. Happy, yet sinister at the same time. It has nothing to do with the Candyman movie with Tony Todd, since I never saw it.

I agree with you. It somewhat makes me think the store owner wants to lull the children into a false sense of security and get their guard down by tempting them with candy. Reminds me of a demonic pied piper.

No one in their right mind would ride on a buggy driven by Klaus Kinski.

Sinister? It couldn't be more peaceful!

Mhjm6:

You're right, there's absolutely nothing "sinister" about the song, it's the "modern" mind, filled with media hype about child abductions/murders, molesters, and every evil under the sun parked right outside your door, combined with Child Worship, that is Sinister.

Chill out I'm pretty sure he was joking.

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

reply

I wouldn't say sinister but it could be interpreted as having drug references.

A symptom of the 21st century corrupted mind. Every grown man who is nice to children is a goddamn rapist to people now. So stupid.

That's putting it mildly, OO7

That's what I'm sayin, the fact that I knew that somewhere in this post that the candyman would be depicted as corrupt shows that this is true.

In the 1960s and early 70s America, "Candy Man" was street slang for a street peddler of illicit drugs.

In the early 70s, someone started a nasty rumor that Sammy Davis, Jr. was actually singing about a street drug dealer whose illegal drugs would make people feel ecstatic and forget about their troubles.

it was a little sinister of the candy man to crack that poor kids face with the counter top.

This was parodied on The Simpsons as The Garbage Man

The only thing wrong with this songbis why didn't Charlie go in and get some of the free candy he was handing out?

This was the original Candy Man:

He was the reason why kids should never take candy from strangers!
