Why did the candy shop owner make Charlie pay?

Just earlier in the film he was throwing tons of candy at those kids, essentially giving away half his store for free. Yet when Charlie comes in he makes him pay, seems kinda sh!tty of him.

Thats what i love about these high school girls, i get older they stay the same age.

It's generally assumed that the other kids might have parent funded accounts there. Another theory is that the candy store is in cahoots with Wonka.

Dude was tossing some little candies around, that's all.

Because the Candy man knew Charlie was related to Grandpa Don Joe. Don Joe had stolen candy many times from the candy shop including the time where Don Joe gave Charlie the chocolate bar in the middle of the night.

I always wondered why, at the start of the film, Charlie stands there looking sad whilst the other kid's are getting free sweets?

Was Charlie so poor, he couldn't afford free?

reply

In movie musicals, a musical number like that is not considered part of reality, even in the story world's universe. It's a kind of fantasy interruption.
In fact Grandpa Joe's and Charlie's song and dance was a fantasy interlude, as was Veruca's. How could any of those three know the words to the songs, or the choreography? And how could Bill just make up the words and melody on the spur of the moment?

Maybe they had to pay an entry fee for this event?

Yeah, but he mixed it with love, so it's all good.

reply

It's a musical, as well as an adaptation of a children's story, as another poster pointed out. I don't see this as a problem.

He also gave Charlie good advice, which is don't eat chocolate too fast or he'll get a stomache ache.

reply

It's because he was sick of his *beep* Charlie just spends all his time feeling sorry for himself which is why no one liked hanging around with him and why even the candyshop owner didn't feel sorry for him.

"Goddammit Charlie go drink your cabbage soup!"

reply

Yeah, who would want raggy Charlie stood outside their shop for hours just licking the window.

It wasnt me, it was the other three. Hang them!

reply

Because Slugworth SAID SO!

He said,"Make Charlie pay...
