The Ham Sandwich Monologue

That one makes me chuckle every time:

I was in the Navy...I'm fourty-nine...I was going to school in Oakland...and I had many white friends...I would have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches...the white boys was eatin' ham sandwiches...

"With apple butter."

It's one of the best scenes in the entire film, probably because it seems so natural, as if Bakshi took a tape recorder to an actual Harlem bar. I think if people saw that scene, the black imagery wouldn't offend so much.

I think the natural dialogue is one of the many strengths of the film. I got pretty annoyed a while back when I read a review that was complaining against the dialogue for the fact that it sounded like it was written through observing people on the street. What da hell, man?

Actually, that's kind of exactly what he did.

Yes, I found that out. My post on that is a little under the one you replied to.

Hello again. I was looking at some stills from the film, and I found out something interesting about how the scene was recorded.
