Best Director 1972: Coppola or Fosse?

Having just watched Godfather straight through for the first time in a decade, it’s very clear how much of what worked so well was Coppola’s direction and vision. That Coppola is the greatest film director of all time is arguable.

Cabaret, OTOH, is a forgotten film I’ve never seen. But I am familiar with Bob Fosse’s work on “Lenny” and “All That Jazz,” and he’s in Coppola’s rarefied tier.

So can anyone who’s seen both films tell me why Fosse snatched Best Director that year and not Coppola? Specifically, what directing achievements did you see in “Cabaret” that outshined Coppola’s?
