I watched Sounder last night for the first time since I was a kid. It's a wonderful film that's subtle, yet very moving. Unfortunately, Sounder had to compete with Cabaret and The Godfather for the Oscars that year.

I missed the other film TCM aired featuring Cicely Tyson last night. The title alone, A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich, makes this sound very interesting.

I couldn't agree more...there are several scenes in this movie that move me to tears, no matter how many times I watch it, in particular, when Nathan comes home from jail and Rebecca is running to him...gets me every time. Cicely Tyson is extraordinary in this movie.

Beautiful, intelligent and Heartbreaking film ! Criminally forgotten and underappreciated !

And yeah Cicely Tyson's best role EVER ! (with her brillant portrayal of Harriet Tubman in " A Woman Called Moses " ! )

I'll never forget the scene where Cicely Tyson cooks the cake for Nathan in jail and the policeman totally ruins it.

I agree. It is one of the best movies ever made! Outstanding acting all around and an excellent story. Very educational as well. I would have voted it best picture as well as Winfield and Tyson. I think Kevin Hooks should have gotten a nomination as well (at least). Did he get any award for this film? I read a couple comments saying this movie was "forgotten". I disagree. After all, the academy remembered it to honor it with a nomination for best picture, actor, actress, plus several others. A nomination may not be as good as winning, but it is still a tremendous honor.

I still think Cicely Tyson was robbed back in '73. She should have won the Oscar - hands down! Brilliant performance!

I was first introduced to Cicely Tyson in her role in 'Fried Green Tomatoes' which is, ironically, a similar story of strife during the depression. She is, of course, brilliant in both pictures.
