Peter Cushing reading the hateful Valentine's Day cards

It was easily the most disturbing, painful and brutal scene in the movie.

I understand that he had recently lost his wife prior to the film's production. He gave one hell of a performance

I agree with everything I've read. That scene is so heartbreaking, sad and unbelievably callous. That's why the best thing about this film is Zombie Cushing!!!

I agree. The whole section with Pete Cushing in was sad. From getting his dogs removed from him, to poisoning the children's minds against him, to making sure he lost his job, to the nastiness of that nasty man sending dozens of Valentine cards with sinister messages. It was all upsetting to watch. And he had lost his beloved wife too. Poor chap had nothing to live for.

My heart weeped for this old man!

Cushing was superb in that movie.

Yeah it is a really depressing scene and Cushing's reaction as he is reading the card is brilliant acting. Laurence Olivier is said to have regarded Cushing as the best screen actor he knew.

I hate that sequence and generally want to avoid it because it is so horrifically cruel.

Peter Cushing is such a good actor
