Scorsese's greatest film

When I say i think it's his greatest I don't like to think I mean he peaked all the way back in 1973, he's made an infallible list of masterpieces in his career, but Mean Street is by far his most personal and it shows in ever scene of the film. One of my all time favourite films!

reply

It's my favourite Scorsese movie if not his best.

Mean Streets is currently my second favorite Scorsese film, but it's slowly becoming my favorite of his. I love this masterpiece.

At any rate, despite the mediocre Hugo being called Scorsese's most personal work these days, I think Mean Streets will always be closer to his heart.

Listen man. Don't worry about my green funk.

I also love this film. Scorsese is God.

Maybe I placed Hugo, Gangs of New York and Shutter Island above Mean Streets because they are better movies than Mean Streets.

Apparently, a few others agree:

Mean Streets
Ratings: 7.5/10 from 57,081 users

Hugo
Ratings: 7.6/10 from 201,835 users

Gangs of New York
Ratings: 7.5/10 from 248,426 users

Shutter Island
Ratings: 8.1/10 from 541,561 users

The idea that Gangs of New York (or Shutter Island!) is considered by anyone to be a better movie than Mean Streets... I just find it utterly depressing.

Gangs of New York could have been much better. Casino & Shutter Island deserve more credit.

reply

Gangs of New York was brilliant and the actors were even better!

I think I'll report you for trolling.

Anyone who ranks MS below Hugo is just a malicious troll, even given the subjectivity of evaluating film.

"Nope. 13th greatest"

Is that really how you feel about it or are you just kidding? SHUTTER ISLAND is superior to MEAN STREETS, huh? HUGO too? You're a dribbling buffoon, and you should've declined the lobotomy.

reply

How do you not have The Departed listed?

reply

The Departed was Scorsese's worst film, out of the 18 of his that I've seen so far.

Out of the ones I've seen:

1) Goodfellas
2) The Wolf Of Wall Street
3) The Departed
4) Taxi Driver
5) Raging Bull
6) Mean Streets

I agree, it's a brilliant, brilliant film. Themes Scorsese would refer to again and again are "sown" in this film and it's certainly his most naturalistic work. Great script, wonderful performances and a "feel" that's never been replicated by any of his other films.
Second favourite would probably be King of Comedy. I tend to like his less...operatic? films more than the big bombastic work. Goodfellas is still a very good film, though. Likewise Raging Bull.

7.4 is too low for this movie, it's easily his second best movie after Goodfellas!

reply

You are absolutely RIGHT i agree with you,Mean streets is BY far Scorsese's best FILM he made and he cant make a film as good as It is again.

reply

Literally JUST finished Mean Streets right now and I was floored by it. Every trademark stylistic device attributed to Scorsese is on display here, but with handheld cameras on a shoestring budget. This gives the film a raw, visceral quality that works PERFECTLY for its story. Definitely in my top 5 Scorsese. As for your question, I think his greatest film is unquestionably Goodfellas, which to me fulfills the promise of Mean Streets on an epic level.

See? Things aren't so bad! Look at the PARKING LOT, Larry! Just look at that parking lot...

reply

Agreed. To me, it's about the authenticity of it. I like that this is less refined and more rough around the edges than Scorsese's other films. Polish is good, but it can mean a movie that is a little too perfect.
