Wait a minute, the real Maturette didn't die in prison?

If this is all based on a real event, why change the story so that someone who survived died?

Never mind, I found a Wikipedia page on him that explains it.
Apparently, he was recaptured, and then for some reason he was free to go and lived the rest of his life in Venezuela. Clousiot was the one who was sent in solitary and died.
You are right, it's strange, why would they change it?
