2 star review from Ebert?

With all the crap he has given good reviews to, he should issue a public apology. He gave "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" 3 stars. "Swing Vote" also got 3 stars.

Everyone has a bad day. I watch atleast 300 movies a year and Papillon is a true classic like Godfather. Rating the movie bad is a fail :)

Yeah! I'm a big Ebert fan, but I wonder if he ever reappraised that review. He pretty much writes it off big time, while I reckon it features McQueen's best work.

As you say: "Everyone has a bad day". I've tended to agree with his reviews over the years moreoften than disagree.

Are critics allowed to change their mind about films and give it a new review? When I first saw Purple Noon when I was in my teens due to the acclaim especially after the Mendes version, I found it boring and dragging. But I rewatched it again last year and now love it, I watched it again after a week.

Papillon had it`s moments, but did drag on quite a while.. Ebert said we didn`t feel enough for McQueens character, and the viewer is left hoping he escapes simply so the movie can be over..
To me it`s one of those movies I wouldn`t desire to see again. Didn`t have a huge impact.
