The Indians that Gave the Pearls to Papillon:

what Indian tribe--or nation, as they say nowadays--are they?

reply

I don't mean to completely change the question, but maybe somebody could help me understand the whole section with the natives. I didn't understand why he gave the chief the tattoo then they all left. Maybe I just missed it but I didn't understand that.

I read the book before the movie came out. It went into much more detail. The Indians were , of course , some South American group , Papillon stayed with them for quite some time in real life , well over a year , and in fact lived with the chiefs daughter as his wife. Why he left the tribe to eventually be caught I don't recall.

squirrelinthebush--
Can only speculate that perhaps they all left as it being some sorta solemn sacred ceremony that they were not worthy of--think 'Wayne's World.' The 'chief' played by Canadian-born actor Victor Jory 1902-1982.

Do and you shall be. Be and you shall do..Doo bee doo bee doo.

Maybe they were a kind of nomadic tribe, and they just go somewhere else once they can't find more fish/pearls

very admirable research there.

As you probably know, there were issues brought up about the scenes featuring the younger native females in the film. Without getting into detail, I always find their brief scenes uncomfortable to watch.

Either that wallpaper goes or I do!!! [O. Wilde last words]

I am not about to discuss your inane reply. You have made a great case for yourself as being comfortable with those scenes you obviously drool over. End it here.

Neither one of you have apparently ever had a daughter.

reply

I have 4 daughters pinky. I hardly noticed the nakedness. My disgust at your mis-placed prudery, or perhaps the current fashion for paedo-phobia which you appear to indulge in with the rest of the proletariat, triggered my vulger response!!!

Yawn!

You would be taken more seriously by me if you actually learned how to spell the word 'v-u-l-g-a-r'. Call me 'pinky' whatever you wish--you obviously have serious issues in your life that have nothing to do with this film. I suggest anger-management counseling. Seriously. What sort of hate and animosity propels you to attack me for what is an obvious innocent reply by me?

im reading the book now and that tribe is the guajiros, who are supposed to be vicious to outsiders but they "adopt" papillon as one of their own. the reason he tattoos the chief is because the chief really likes papillon's but in the book he admires papillon's tiger tattoo.

That's one thing I never got, and apparently the story in the book is quite different - Charriere claims he not only sleeps with the Chief's daughter but also her 12-year-old sister, and gets them both pregnant. He eventually leaves the village of his own accord, I don't remember why. Actually a lot of his story can be taken with a grain of salt. Anyway, the village sequence is my favorite part of the movie - it is so idyllic and the music fits so perfectly. And Ratna Assan (the beautiful native girl - in real life she's Indonesian) is incredibly hot. Unfortunately, whenever this movie is shown on TV they cut out almost every frame she's in, because she is topless. They have no problems showing the violence, but a bit of harmless National Geographic nudity freaks them out. How stupid. Did I mention Ratna Assan is incredibly hot? Oops, I'd better remember the camp commander's advice, "try not to masturbate, it saps the strength!"

they were'nt in india

Just one thing i didnt get. He could have escaped and gone further away out of reach of the guards in various instances especially by sticking with the indians. If they left the island he should have left with them, was better for him. And im sure it had been a few years since he escaped the prison in the first place and surely they wouldnt have given a damn anymore so why did he tell the nun what ever you call her about his escape and accusations against him.

reply

one thing i dont get is that any country that has natives are CALLED INDIANS?

reply

Perhaps because natives are also refered to as indigenous people - hence indians in short.

From Wikipedia:

The adjective indigenous has the common meaning of "from" or "of the original origin"

Application of the term "Indian" originated with Christopher Columbus, who thought that he had arrived in the East Indies, while seeking Asia.

Does nobody read? Read the book, it will tell you and is even better than the movie too.
