Very well done characterization detail for Riley (SPOILERS)

In the scene when we first meet the gay prison rapist, Riley, as played by Richard Lynch, Hackman and Pacino are in the dorm at their bunks, having just been admitted to prison.

Riley comes over from his own bunk to introduce himself, and we immediately notice that unlike every other bunk in the entire dorm, Riley's sleeping area is full of cut-out centerfolds of naked women from porno magazines. He has a huge 3'x3' collage of nude pinup girls mounted on cardboard right next to his bed.

What a great detail! We can tell right away that Riley is obviously trying to hide something with this over-the-top display of naked women. I wonder if this detail was the director's idea or Richard Lynch's? Lynch was one of the very greatest character actors of the 70s and 80s and I do not doubt that he would put a great deal of thought into fleshing out his characters.
