Your thoughts on the ending?

Seeing Gator led away by the feds at the end of the movie makes me think he is sent back to prison, but of course I don't know if that is what really happens... Would he be charged in connection to the sheriff's death? Would there have been any evidence to prove the sheriff was taking money?

Well, considering that there's a sequel ("Gator") with him working with the feds (as i recall)...

according the the sequel "Gator" he did 26 mos. in the pen ,his second offence...so I would gather that he was charged for reckless endangerment for the sheriff's untimley death

I don't know, but I thought the ending was going to be five minutes earlier when he speeds out of sight, the sheriff gets back in his car and Gator reappears, speeding toward him, I thought he was going to T-bone the car and kill him right then and there.

The Sheriff's death had nothing to do with him going back to jail. He was serving a sentence for something totally different. He got out to avenge his brother's death and help the feds because the fed's suspected the sheriff was corrupt, but had insufficient proof.

Gator was killing two birds with one stone - avenging his brother's death and helping the feds nail the corrupt sheriff, which was really the reason they agreed.

Gator's bargain with the feds was that if they let him out to do this, he would return to finish his sentence.

By the end of the movie, there was enough evidence to probably prove the Sheriff was corrupt and was responsible for the brother's death. The pregnant girl could testify. Also, the Sheriff was in puruit to kill Gator because Gator knew too much the could incriminate the Sheriff.

So, at the end, Gator was going back to finish his original sentence, and keep his end of the bargain. If anything, he might have got out early for good behavior, but it was never agreed the Feds would release him from his original sentence.

HE DID NOT GO BACK TO JAIL BECAUSE OF THE SHERIFF'S DEATH.

Also, it wasn't like Gator shot the Sheriff or stabbed him. It was the Sheriff's
anger and overconfidence that did him in.
