Stett's role (Spoilers on a 48 year old movie)

I'm not clear on what Stett's (Harrison Ford) role and/or motivation in the scheme was. Why would he help the kill The Director?

If we assume that the adulterers did, in fact, kill the Director and that Stett was involved (these conclusions could be the result of Harry’s paranoid mind) then presumably he gets a cut of the inheritance money that the evil couple are entitled to.
