Why Did TMWTGG Underperform at the US Box Office?

When adjusted for inflation, it's the second worst grossing Bond movie only ahead of Licence to Kill:

Weak advertising campaign, according to Wikipedia

Yes, they undersold it thinking it would piggyback after the one from the previous year. But instead of slingshotting out due to LALD, it was undercut.

Personally, I think it is a much better film than LALD.

me too me too. TMWTGG was inspired, innovative, daring and with a Bond you can buy as Bond. Love the atmosphere here, the surreal images and the wonderful Asian estethics.

Man with the golden gun and License to kill are two of my favorite bond movies.

reply

Same here those two are definitely in my top 10.

Lazenby, Dalton & Craig ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES!

When it was released it was the lowest grossing Bond movie to date. So yes it under performed.

Funny thing as the novel was pretty bad much as they used almost nothing from the book.

Nice if they could have worked in the brainwashing bit.

Funny thing how Roger's first film was the first novel they had the rights to
and TMWTGG was the last book period.

So yes it under performed.
I bet heaps of producers would pray that their film underperformed by returning over 7 times its initial budget.🐭
