Why so much post production dubbing?

The only real problem I have with this movie is the sound.

Most, and yes, I mean MOST of the dialogue seems to have been redubbed again in post-production.

I can understand it in a couple of scenes, where there was a noise in the background, but to redo the dialogue for most of the scenes throughout the movie is just bad.

The amplitude, and atmosphere between the voices and the surroundings is just way-off and peculiar it is very distracting at times.

Anyone else notice this?

Yes, but fairly routine for productions from the era. Still, would it have cost them all that much to better-match the ambiance of the scene?

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

Yeah, this is distracting to me, too. Like you said, I could see it happening in some scenes due to background noise, but there's just entirely too much of it. This is the same reason why I consider A Fistful of Dollars to be unwatchable. Yes, I know it was originally made for the European market, but I just can't take it.

EDIT - I'm typing this as I watch it for the first time. There's post-dubbing in the scene when Renda talks with the guy from Stalag 17; there's post-dubbing even in the same scene, where Bronson is miked, but the guy who's going home to pork his wife is dubbed.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.
