Great movie, but one thing I never have understood:

When Mrs. Kintner slaps Brody, and she starts abusing him for not closing the beaches earlier, why doesn't Brody rat out the mayor? He's standing right next to them, and it's not as though the Chief owed that slimeball anything.

If I had been in Brody's shoes, I would have just pointed to the mayor and told her, "THAT's the guy you need to talk to, lady."

Is there any deeper consideration given to this scene, in the book? Was Brody feeling guilty about not closing the beaches in defiance of the mayor's order?

What about if Donald Trump had played the Mayor...?

He would've slapped the old lady.

- Crazy. All crazy but I'm.

I think that was the city cop in him, standing his ground & taking the high road.

Had he been local police born & bred, I'd more expect him to open his mouth with much of the town's public there on the wharf.

Yes, he could have done more including used the press and media.

But the town paper, The Gazette, was trying to bury the story, and block publication of any mention of Kintner's reward or the shark attacks...

I really admire that Brody didn't try to shift blame or pass the buck. He knows his job, his responsibility, and he knows not to be a whiner or point fingers. He chews the mayor out in private, makes him commit to a right course of action, but not in public where it's unprofessional and inappropriate.

reply

That would have been extremely out of character for Brody to do or say. Also, as a parent, he could relate to her grief and probably realized that pointing fingers wouldn't have helped the situation in that moment.

Anyone here mentions Hotel California dies before the first line clears his lips.

All I have to say is the the title of your thread reminded me of Stand By Me, when Vern asks Gordie if lardass had to pay to get into the pie eating contest. 

Because the buck stopped with him. He was the chief, he was responsible for their safety. He let himself be pressured to go along with the 'preferred" version of what happened and ignored what his gut told him he should do. Mrs. Kintner had every right to hold him responsible and he was correct to take it from her. Sure he did redeem himself by going out and killing the shark, but make no mistake Alex Kintners death was on him.
