I've always wondered about this but have never seen it addressed anywhere: Are the voices of Katharine Ross and Paula Prentiss dubbed in the supermarket scene? It doesn't sound like them to me. I thought maybe it was supposed to indicate that the men wanted women with deeper-sounding voices, but not sure.
shareI think the voices are the same but the robot wives speak more politely, slowly and with less emotional inflection. No squealing or "happy to see you". Just polite controlled programmed words. And yes - maybe a sexier breathier voice which we can all do if we want to. :)
shareI agree with that assessment but looking at the scene closely I think it's also very possible that the actors' voices were looped in during post-production. To me it sounds like the actors' real voices (with the aforementioned formal and slightly huskier vocal interpretations) were used but there's that slight disembodied quality that a dubbed vocal track creates. If so, there could have been some technical reason inherent in the filming of the supermarket scene itself or maybe in post they just wanted to tweak things so that the women all sounded more like one another and/or better capture that effect juleereeves describes.
