Paula Prentiss vs. Sally Kellerman

I don't mean to take from Paula Preintiss' acting; however, all throughout the film, I could see Sally Kellerman as Bobbie, and she would have been fantastic!

reply

I respect your opinion but Paula rocks in this film, I can't see anyone in her role. Oddly enough I think Barbara Parkins would have been awesome as Carol, although I love Nanette in the role as well.

Paula Prentiss is the more appropriate actress for Bobbie, because she had been in a lot of "girl next door" roles in the early-to-mid-1960's (Where the Boys Are, Man's Favorite Sport, 2 or 3 movies with Jim Hutton, etc.,) and so her personality in (the first 90% of) The Stepford Wives as a liberated mid-70's woman is a poignant reminder of how discordant the women's lib movement had been to men who'd been nurtured on the 1950's stay-at-home model of womanhood.

reply

Prentiss is the warmer actress, but Kellerman has the better voice. I found Bobbi somewhat off-putting; not because she's liberated, but due to Prentiss. She would also co-star with Tina Louise in a tv film where they have a nasty argument

reply

Warmer? She kneed Yossarian in the balls!

Marlon, Claudia and Dimby the cats 1989-2005, 2007 and 2010.

reply

Joanna Cassidy had already been cast and shot a few scenes, but was abruptly fired for some reason.

reply

Paula Prentiss is extremely likeable, whereas Kellerman is abrasive.

reply

I never know what to make of Kellerman when I see her. I also find her sort of mannish and yes, abrasive or aggressive.

How pompously poignant it is to remember how discordant the women's lib movement had been to content women who chose their place (those women who had a spine, that is) Those women liked and preferred to be "stay-at-home' mothers because they actually cared about nurturing their young, unlike today. What a tearful disappointment.
