Supermarket Manager

Do you think the supermarket manager was aware of the "unusual" situation in Stepford? In his scene, he was pretty much pleading an operator (apparently) to send an ambulance right away. However, this operator was apparently not reacting the way one would in a normal accident with humans. He or she seemed to be aware of the lack of urgency in fixing a machine.

That is in interesting question! I've often wondered the point of that scene.

Can you hear me?....They did this

In the novel, the supermarket manager IS in on it. So is the Police Chief!

We're led to believe that except for literally 1 or 2 new families that move in, ALL the people in Stepford are either robots or co-conspirators.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

reply

The scene's a little confusing for me because he seems to be arguing with the operator to bring an ambulance immediately. Why was the operator apparently giving him such a hard time? Why would he be so excited if he knew the "victim" of the accident was just a robot?

reply

Probably because he doesn't want the few people that aren't 'in on it' in the town to see what's happening.
There appear to be only around 2 or 3 human wives in the town of Stepford at one time, and they want their secret kept safe from them.

I think you're absolutely right. I was a little dense thinking that Joanna was the ONLY wife being "groomed" for her ultimate fate. The operator was probably as myopic as I was; however the manager probably could identify some of the human wives outside the window. Now I wonder who was the operator and why was he/she/it giving him such a hard time!

What about the welcome wagon lady? She was a garrulous old woman who didn't look like a typical Stepford wife or have a robotic personality. I figure she must have been a co-conspirator, perhaps the only female one.

Have you seen the little piggies crawling in the dirt?

Nah, she's just Stepford's only spinster. She's definitely not in on it.

reply

Yeah, remember the men were making what they thought was somewhat of an "ideal" woman. Notice that all of them are very good-looking.
