Can't understand the ending (spoiler) regarding Ben's trip upstairs

How in the world is he able to get tossed out the window that easily by Marian?

Even if she hadn't aged she wouldn't be able to toss him that far.

What's up with that?

In a film where a house is able to actually sustain itself and regenerate by feeding on the fears of its inhabitants, it's your weird personal opinion on whether a woman can push a man out of a window that you take issue with?

Very odd.

reply

Did you see how he was thrown? Like he was tossed out like a bag of trash? There's no way someone of Marian's size (and she had aged right?) could lift him and heave him like that.

If the house gave her that superhuman strength okay then I get it.

But the movie intimates that Marion threw him out, at least that's my take. He was a big man and she was a frail older woman right?

Just asking

As we don't see it, what may have happened is that he was struck by the terror so much that he leapt out of the window to escape from the woman his wife had become. After all, we don't know exactly what this woman is capable of as evil forces are at work. It may be a demon that has taken over her body, it may be the forces of the house itself that threw him out the window now that the house's strength had been replenished.

There are many things that may have led to this event occurring.

Not trying to be smartass but its simply the power of deduction, everything presented in the film is obviously pointing towards that not being "Marion" anymore and she is now the vessel for "mother" and is possessed as others have posted so of course its not "marion" having the strength its whatever entity that has taken her over. I have a feeling this is the reason we are spoon fed POS movies without any stories and nothing ambiguous, because people refuse to actually WATCH the movie.

People are just too busy playing with their phones and/or other distractions to actually pay full attention to what they are watching, leading them to ask the dumbest questions. It isn't being a "smartass" to state the truth.

It's supposed to be interpretive
The way he was thrown out makes it look like he jumped, but it could have very well been Marion. I think it's creepier if he jumped, though.

reply

Can you imagine if he'd seen the Chauffeur again? That would be enough to finally make him jump! I can easily imagine him jumping. This was just too much at this point, and it drove him over the edge. It is tragic.

On a sad note, Dan Curtis's daughter had died by jumping from a tall building and production had to be shut down on this movie for a few weeks because of it. Dan still had to return to shoot this already scripted scene, and it must have been very difficult for him to do after what he had just gone through. But he was a trooper and finished the film as planned. It's tragic.

Also, the stunt performer who did the dive was unexpectedly propelled too far out the window. Had the crew, who were in charge of the large mattress to cushion his fall, not been paying attention, he'd have overshot and hit the ground. Luckily, they moved and barely caught him! Whew!
