Similar spooky movies

I think Burnt Offerings is a scary movie because it is creepy, without the need for gore. What other movies do you guys recommend like this?
I think the Sixth Sense and The Others were just silly, so don't say them! Something about Burnt Offerings just keeps you so edgy throughout...

The Changeling
Brotherhood Of Satan
The Haunting (original)
City Of The Dead (aka Horror Hotel)

Try Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon, which came out around the same time as Sixth Sense but was creepier (IMHO).

Dude means nice guy. Dude means a regular sort of person.

Movies that have this feel and of the right era-

LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH
THE OTHER (not OTHER[s}
DEATHDREAM
SHOCK WAVES
CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS
SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT

The Sentinel
The Legacy

Jesse, we can't seem to find Deathdream. Does it possibly have another title on imdb?? thanks !

Your other suggestions are excellent. Let's Scare Jessica is a classic. The Other gave me creeps as a little boy, and it still holds up ! Shock Waves is one of my cult classics. You can't beat Peter Cushing.

it's also known as Dead of Night (1972)

"All wanted was a Pepsi. Just one Pepsi. And she won't give it to me!"

It's on youtube for free under death dream, but on imdb it is dead of night, when you type in deathdream tho it comes up and you'll see same cover.

Yes to all of those (except The Possession of Joel Delaney, I haven't seen that one yet).
Plus:

Full Circle (aka The Haunting of Julia) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074611/?ref_=sr_1
Symptoms http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072239/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Unlike BO, The Legend of Hell House or The Changeling, these two don't offer much in the way of straightforward horror (= gruesome death) scenes, but have an eerie, haunting atmosphere about them.

The Mephisto Waltz http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067419/?ref_=sr_1
The Reincarnation of Peter Proud http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073615/?ref_=sr_1
...the latter with Margot Kidder, I like her craziness even more than Karen Black's. Which reminds me...
Black Christmas http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071222/?ref_=sr_2, that's more of a slasher, though.

reply

If you like Karen Black in a good horror film, I suggest Trilogy of Terror. Trully unforgetable.

Similar spooky films,

The Shining
Session 9
The Legend of Hell House
The Dark Secret of Harvest Home...with Bette Davis again.
The Hearse...which copies the sinister hearse driver theme
Beyond Evil
The Changeling
Suspira...a slightly different style but quite spooky nontheless
