Extremely overrated. You can skip this flick.

It was absolutely nothing like how it was hyped up to be.

I wouldn't even put this close to my top 500.

If you have yet to see this film, there's no rush, this is more like some amateur art student's film project for class. Bad acting, writing, and directing.

Had a lot of potential. It desperately needs a remake.

Right...Martin Scorsese was an amateur kid with a camcorder who knows absolutely nothing about film-making, Robert DeNiro in the 70's knew nothing about method acting. I'm guessing that your idea of a great filmmaker is probably Michael Bay or someone equally mindless.

reply

DeNiro absolutely personified Travis to an unnerving level(As he did for the rest of his career) with talent that only a few have EVER had. There's never a moment where you question whether someone like this could exist. It's frightening. He humanized a Maniac. I think of Scenes like his talk with The Wiz, the Phone Call, the Shooting in the Convenience Store(Great Vic Argo cameo btw!)... But all of these plus so much more, it's Cinematic Perfection by one of, if not the BEST Director/Actor combination of all time... Definitely my favorite. It's the opposite of everything the Troll OP said it was. Top 500??? Top 20, if not higher for me. Granted I'm a Scorsese guy but this was something crafted by Mad Geniuses. At the perfect time, in the perfect place and of course, with the perfect people to pull it off. I'm gonna watch it tonight now lol.

reply

Taxi Driver is definitely one of the best character studies ever committed to film. Unfortunately, character-based movies are becoming increasingly rare in major studio films (because of reactions like the Michael Bay fan OP's, which major film studios have to cater to because that's what drives the film market).

Incidentally, are you also a fan of The King of Comedy? In my opinion, it's the second-best Scorseses/DeNiro film, and in many ways it's the darkly comedic twin to Taxi Driver.

reply

I love KOC. As far my favorite Scorsese/DeNiro film goes, it's Goodfellas. I just think Scorsese really mastered the art and his skill was showcased perfectly. DeNiro was fantastic as always BUT, performance wise, it's hard to compare to those early films. My order would go Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comedy... But not by much. Even Scorsese is freaked out by him in KOC. I even love Cape Fear. I don't think they can go wrong. KOC is often overlooked though and it shouldn't be. It's growing more and more in fans over the years.

reply

Great. So the names of the cast decide whether it is a good flick or not. You're a genius.

reply

The OP is just another flamer, dropping bombs and running away.

reply

Yeah, he is obviously trolling. The structure and content are a red flag.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

You don't' know if that's the translation, since some critics did not appreciate the film either, and not because the 'message" was lost on them.

I wonder: if not directed by Scorcese and starring "method-actor" (how trendy) Deniro, would this receive the high rating it did.

reply

I don't criticize the fact that he dislikes the film, but it pisses me off when people say a movie is bad without providing any evidence, and when people post opinions on a film in the message boards rather than as a review like they're supposed to.
And considering the fact that Scorsese was a nobody before he made Taxi Driver and Taxi Driver is the biggest reason he is held with such high regard today, I would say that yes, if another director had made this exact same film it would still be regarded as one of the GOATs, similar to the way the Deer Hunter is considered a classic, even though it is widely thought of as Cimino's only good movie.

reply

I agree: the acting, direction is not bad. But, Scorsese was not a nobody; he made Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Mean Streets, 73'- 74'.

Nevertheless, it's not asking too much to expect something more substantive and coherent than "THIS SUCKS," "BORING" or "WORST MOVIE EVER!" Nor is it unreasonable to dismiss the opinions of people whose idea of great film making is Michael Bay or Rob Zombie.

I actually agree (And happy to see someone I agree with to this matter actually).

Rubbish movie. People are weird sometimes to like stuff like this.

reply

While I think it is a good movie, after rewatching it recently I agree that it is overrated. The movie and performances are interesting, but the movie ends in a very odd heavy handed way. The ending in which Travis is seen as a hero seems to come out of left field and makes me wonder what the whole point of the movie was. The movie is definitely missing something.

reply

The point is that the world is as crazy as Travis.

reply

Um, no, not over-rated at all.

reply

People like you make me laugh, really I'm not mad like you expect me to be.

There's always a person that lack of attention that goes from classics to classics saying tramp just to have a little attention or so we believe they actually have a good taste or a immense amount of criticism.

Get a life or a pair of glasses.

reply

It was far more than that. One of the best films ever.
