Finding his captain, taking him to the hospital, threatening the doctor - could someone please explain the point of all of that to the film?
You don't see what got them in that situation, or what they were trying to achieve. It's just dropped into the film with no bearing on the plot whatsoever.

It has to do with the 'I promise you won't get killed' scene earlier.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

Exactly, but it does make James Caan look good, taking care of his officer.
