I didn't hate the movie or anything but the last 15 20 minutes are incredibly wheels off...

Saturday Night Fever made Disco popular in the mainstream and Travolta busting his moves on the dance floor and him wearing that white suit became iconic images of the 70's. Also, it of course had huge hit songs by the Bee Gees.
So often because of that people just think of that stuff and either forget or don't realise about the dark and depressing moments in it.
Add to that because of it's impact on pop culture, a PG rated version was released at some point to make it more accessible to everyone.
So if you're expecting a cosy family movie with a nice Travolta (as he was in Grease) the real version can catch you by surprise like it did me when I first saw it when I was a little kid lol.
It's an oldie where I come from
I saw the PG version in March of '78 for my buddy's 11th birthday. Sometime in the mid 80's, while I was in college, I finally saw the original R rated film. I remember my reaction was that I couldn't believe how dark and gritty it actually Is.

I was digging the movie up until they win the competition and Travolta throws a tantrum. It goes downhill after that. Any little sympathy for the character left is gone (he treats women like shit and racially abuse blacks and hispanics)
shareEveryone treats everyone like shit in this movie, that's the point, I'm sorry your fragile little feelings couldn't handle it. We the audience are not supposed to agree with all of the decisions the characters make.
And Tony realized that he was given 1st prize because the Disco needs him, people come to the disco to see him dance and in the end he was being exploited and used.
Everything after the dance contest was good, it was dark, the characters didn't make good decisions but it was good filmmaking and it was necessary for the story. Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, sometimes people treat each other like shit even when they don't deserve it, it's a brutal place and it will beat you down if you let it.
Stephanie was also a bitch, she did not deserve what Tony attempted to do with her but she wasn't exactly the nicest person. For a while she was only hanging around Tony because maybe her life did suck but at least it was better than his. She didn't even legitimately have any respect for him until after he helped her move.
Also I'm pretty sure he apologized to Stephanie for the way he acted.

EDIT: Taxi Driver isn't all that deep BTW and now that I think about it it's quite odd that you would defend that film considering it depicts a 12 year old being used as a prostitute. That's far worse than the Donna Pescow Back Seat Scene
