So why did Gus lie about the Barracudas?

They never really explained it that well.

He said it was the Barracudas then later said he wasn't sure. I thought he was a moron, not a liar.

Gus was trying to impress the guys by saying he got attacked by a gang. He was a moron and didn't think they'd all go through with staging an attack on the Barracudas.

reply

So then who really attacked him? Guess it doesn't matter.

That's what I like to know, who attacked him? Possibly somebody he pissed off in their neighborhood, it's possible.

reply

If Gus wasn't sure then it would make sense just to say the Barracudas. 

Probably still was the Barracudas, or at least a better than even chance.

Gus began to feel guilt after his friends attacked the Barracudas on his say so. It's one thing to blame the Barracudas, it's another thing entirely to see them punished when he wasn't completely sure it was them.

My favorite line in the movie!

My best guess is he was lipping off to someone and got his a-s kicked. He was probably embarrassed and rather than tell the truth made up the story that he got beat up by a gang to save face.

Brooklyn was a much different place in the 70s/80s and even 90s. Bay Ridge was an Italian and Greek neighborhood, much more Italian, in those eras. You seldom if ever saw blacks and Hispanics hanging out. The Hispanics lived in the Gowanus area which was miles away. He probably figure if he blamed the Barracudas, a Hispanic gang, he would never see them or face them and have to fight them with his friends. I doubt he ever expected his friends to go to their club and fight them on their turf.

^This. I always assumed this. Tony and his flying monkeys were always going off at the mouth trying to play the tough guy role. Gus knew no matter what happened, his fellas would have his back and exact revenge.

He got a broken nose, busted ribs, a broken leg, and four teeth knocked out. That is a pretty savage beating. That type of beating doesn’t come from someone that was simply being lipped off to. He likely got jumped by a gang. He said it was probably the Barracudas because he thought it was and that was enough for his friends to hear. There were Hispanics living in Sunset Park which bordered Bay Ridge and was not miles away.

I think it was just a mix of stupidity and misunderstanding. Gus perhaps wasn't careful with his wording and didn't really stress it *might* have been the Barracudas, because he didn't think his friends would actually do anything about it.
