... just set the case of sweating (well, sweated) dynamite under the tree and shot it with the hitguy's revolver (if they could talk him out of it).

Hell of a movie, anyway. I wonder how it flew under my radar all these years?

Might not have been a viable idea due to lack of cover for the shooter(?). I imagine he would have to closer than anyone would want to be.

That would risk blowing a huge crater in the road, creating a different obstacle. The tree had to be blown up from the top.
