one of ***those*** films -

Roger Ebert described such endeavors as films where the quest of the hero is scarcely more mad than the quest of the filmmaker - specifically in terms of Werner Herzog's blurring-the-line docu-fiction epics. William Friedkin has created here something of a miracle in cinema - a film barely above the line of being a documentary about its own creation. Others like this: Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Apocalypse Now, et al.

Interesting observation. I never considered Sorcerer in that light before. In hearing Friedkin talk about the making of the film, as he has done a lot of recently, I can't say that the madness of his quest quite measures up to Coppola, but it's in the conversation definitely. It's also interesting that both Coppola and Friedkin never recovered after these respective films. Anything afterwards is at best a decent movie (To Live and Die in LA, Dracula, Godfather III).
