Best Bond movie EVER

This is the perfect 007 film.
Awesome opening sequence with a great stunt.
Great villain.
Terrific henchman.
Unsurpassed sets.
Greatest car.
Hottest girl.
Nicest music.
It's fun, funny, sexy.
The story is classic, the action is gripping, the rhythm is incessant.
The locations are gorgeous but real, not postcards.
This is my favourite Bond movie.

reply

Nope, the villains plot was way too over the top. For me, Moonraker was the best Bond movie ever

reply

So? You've proven there's no accounting for taste. Now what?

reply

I think this is the most overrated Bond movie ever.

reply

How so?
I cannot think of a single aspect of it that is overrated.
If anything,it should get more attention.

I´ll preface by saying that, its not a bad film by any stretch but it feels rather mediocre for a Bond film for various reasons. Stromberg is a weak villain, he is almost cartoonish (in fairness could say this about most Bond villains) and not at all menacing. Barbara Bach is quite beautiful but her acting leaves a lot to be desired. My main problem though is the lack of tension in the film, it has pacing issues. The 2nd half in particular drags, the submarine assault on the Atlantis also feels underwhelming.

reply

Ok, I could agree with all your points.
But like you said yourself, they are common problems in the franchise.

And pacing issues is kind of an overstatement. I would say that, like most Bond movies, he is often getting away too easily, so the tension is mild. You always know no idiot would ever have Bond die in his own movie.......

reply

Thanks, I applaud your polite and mature response despite our past, somewhat hostile differences of opinion.
RE: tension/pacing. It just feels like a very leisurely Bond outing. Bond in the Egyptian desert etc. The best sequence of the movie for me, is the Lotus v helicopter but that is over quite quickly. Yeah you could say, many Bond films can be a slow grind, but something like Thunderball (which is incredibly slow) has all the classic elements, Bond in the casino, Bond´s relationship/chemistry with Domino, (which develops naturally), strong femme fatale (Fiona Volpe) that I feel make up for it. In TSWLM, I don´t get that at all.

Have you done the Bond sorta app ranking? I´d be interested to see how you rank them all.

reply

No, I have not done that ranking, but I have seen them all and what I find fundamental is Bond.
Moore, Connery, Brosnan and Dalton are all excellent in their own way.
I think my favourite Bond is Brosnan, maybe because he is the most balanced and modern. But of his movies I like Goldeneye and The World is not Enough. Connery and Moore I can enjoy all of their films, although they often border in the comedy or farce department, while Dalton's get too mundane. But they are all fine.
Lazenby had a great story, but he was weak as Bond and ruined it.
Craig is not even Bond, so fuck him, his movies and the whole debacle his Bourne parroting was, I won't dignify that with a comment, other that he was a waaaaaay more interesting Bond in Munich.

reply

I agree with you on Brosnan, Goldeneye and TWINE are his best, I have Tomorrow Never Dies in my bottom five though.
I am not much of a Craig fan either, Quantum of Solace is actually my worst Bond film.
Lazenby didn´t really ruin OHMSS for me, I think had OHMSS been Connery´s last Bond, it would have been worse than Lazenby´s effort just because Connery was showing signs of being over it in YOLT and barely tried in DAF. For me, Lazenby did quite well with the emotional scenes with Tracy, and I am not sure I could see them working with Connery.
