plot hople about the "disappeared" guy

(sorry for my engl)

i really liked this movie but i think there's a huge plot hole about this guy.
What about his family? Other friends? Was he so alone? was so easy let him "disappear?"

I see what you mean but you just have to assume he wouldn't have been missed. Certainly his employers would have known this about him. Obviously they weren't concerned with friends looking for him.

reply

I agree and was wondering the same thing.

You would think that they could have just anticipated the signal problem and had set it up so that this wasn't detectable or had an inside guy responsible for monitoring that instead of an employee that was in the dark about the plot.

It was a nice staged 'problem' to create some drama, but that would be the first thing I'd make sure was covered.

Apparently Elliot Gould was his only friend and he had no family. The conspirators also changed every phone book in the city to replace his name, address and phone number with the woman they put into his apartment.

reply

That's the main thing that always bothered me too.

In the paperback novelization (Goulart), Caulfield produces an old phone book with Whitter's name and address in it to his boss to point out how there are some things that are impossible even for the conspirators to pull off and that's one of the reasons why Loughlin for the moment is willing to let him keep going. There was no reference in the film that they did get all the phone books changed.

reply

That helps a little though it still seems to me there'd be a lot more evidence than just a phone book.
