Just watched this movie on laserdisc and saw it was filmed close to me, so today I went out to the exact location. In the ultimate of ironies, the old gas station is STILL there, but the big station across the street has been torn down and paved over! The old gas station is now a California Recycling Center, the gas pumps in front are gone (along with the heart-shaped Joe's Super Duper sign on top) but looks more or less the same as it did in the movie; it's a miracle it's still standing at all! The Arcade Market visible in the background is still there too, along with the cool-looking parking lot lights.

I remember the promotion for this movie. Since it appeared to have a good story (an underdog vs the circumstances) we went to see it at the drive-in. Since I'm also an old movie person, seeing Huntz Hall, by then one of the last surviving Dead End Kids, made it even better. Like the others he got into trouble off & on but by the time he reached 40 he didn't no more & didn't self destruct or fall under the curse that most of the others did.
