Best musical of the past 40 years

I can't think of any that are better.

Chicago ?
Les Miserables ?
Moulin Rouge ?

Please. They're not even close.

I do not really care for musicals, but the only ones I can think of that I would sit through alone and enjoy are Grease, Moulin Rouge and Willy Wonka (if that can be counted as a musical).

I think all of those are close in quality and entertainment value.

reply

I would definitely call Willy Wonka a musical.

Didn't care for "Dreamgirls," huh?

"'Extremely High Voltage.' Well, I don't need safety gloves, because I'm Homer SimpZZZzzzzZZZ--" - Frank Grimes

I would say there's not even much competition for this if you're going by the last 40 years.

I agree with that but it's still the best

I agree.

"Grease" is probably the best movie musical since the mid 1960s.

reply

Best since Cabaret .

What about that LaLaLand movie?

reply

"La La Land" was one of the worst musicals of all time. Most people today are unfamiliar with the genre, so they were easy to convince that it was a big deal.

I love Grease, but I never listen to the soundtrack, as opposed to the soundtrack to The Phantom of the Opera, which I listen to frequently.

And "Into The Woods" was a better story than either of those, and the songs are poignant but not "great."

I'm thinking I would even pick Hairspray before Grease.

Without me looking it up to see if it's true, I'm going to say that Grease should be listed as the best musical of all time because it has the most hit songs than any other musical.
