A theory I have **SPOILERS**
That tiny little dinosaur creature is an early proto-type of the breed of piranha we see in the movie. It was not as aggressive as the piranhas, so it was kept around the lab as sort of a pet to keep the staff company. Notice how it doesn't even try to attack anyone when it is seen.
