Looks and feels dated for 1980

This movie looks very dated, as is the story, if you compare it to contemporaries like Alien and Empire Strikes Back. There are however certain things I like about it, even though it certainly is not a good movie in general.

The atmosphere and sound design is successfully menacing, and I like some of the set/ costume design. It has some striking imagery, mostly involving the robot. Other than that the story and dialogue is bad-to-average. It's basically the age-old crazy scientist and monster-creation type plot told since Frankenstein's Monster but set in space. I'd recommend it to cult SciFi buffs as an interesting and forgotten curiosity but it's no classic of the genre.
