Why did... (spoiler)

...Captain James' body shatter when it hit the cables across the air vent?

He wasn't moving that fast, and his suit seemed to be designed to protect him from vaccuum. There seemed to be no reason, other than to provide a gruesome special effect.

Any explanations?

A model was used because cgi did not exist in 1980 to add any extra fx. The other reason is the production problems did not make any fixes possible. When the movie appeared in my area drive-in theaters were still around and it only lasted a day and was gone because no one showed up.

I always figured... a) the pressure of the air being released pulled him into it forcefully enough to slice him up, and b) their thoughts on a vaccuum at the time, were that he instantly froze in the cold of space as he was cut up, so appeared to shatter... ;-)

As gas decompresses, its temperature drops. This is why gas from an aerosol can is cold. The opposite is also true - air being compressed in a bicycle pump is hot.

I think that the idea behind the scene is that the cold air running over the person froze his body, suddenly. This is why his body shattered. Seems improbable though.

That's pretty much what I meant! ;-) It may be improbable with today's knowledge of science, but I think at the time, it probably seemed a reasonable enough assumption. Hell, even modern movies like "Mission to Mars" get away with it! (Just watch the scene where Tim Robins removes his helmet)

That scene gave me nightmares for years as a kid, thanks to my big brother sitting me in front of it one night.

It was Benson who put them cables across the airlock to murder James wasn't it ?

Seems silly to have cables put across the airlock for any other reason, emergency evacuations would be a problem all over the ship - just look what it did to poor James.

When air is suddenly escaping into a vacuum and in this situation where cables are across a vent, maybe, it's reasonable to think, that soft, flesh might be sliced in parts by the cables, depending upon their surface and thinness. As for flesh dissipating like that. I don't know. It's a movie.
