You were fired? Who cares??

A great film to be sure, but
the scene where Ted gets a new
job in a matter of minutes is almost
laughable.

I realizer he has the experience and
that he's willing to sell himself at a
bargain price, but the idea that this
potential employer would ask him
why he is willing to take a cut
in pay without mentioning he did
just get fired is ridiculous.
It sure is important when he
gets to court to fight for custody.

I realize that the guy at that
agency might have mentioned
it in advance but if so, he probably
would get no interview at all.
Then to top it off, he tells them
to make a decision right now
or else. Totally absurd.
Then he magically gets hired
and grabs a woman he never
met and plants one on her.
Cute, but don't try that
in real life, especially
these days where you
have to apologize for
everything

Well it was 1979. Times have changed. I think the new employers saw it as a great deal to hire him at lower pay because he had a impressive portfolio. So they saw it as THEIR advantage to hire him.

reply

Exactly. If it didn't work out they could just fire him.

reply

This. He was offering them a bargain.

It wouldn't work in 1979 either. Times haven't changed that much

Jesus. It's a MOVIE. Stop talking yourself out of enjoying this great, one-of-a-kind film.

The audience doesn’t see the whole job interview. We see the part where the employer skims through the photos. Then the other guy says, “You have 10 minutes,” and we don’t see what they say in those minutes.

I think it’s implied that Ted talked his way around the recent lay-off. Probably said something like, “Being fired taught me so-and-so, which are lessons that I will apply here if I am hired.” Etc
