Tentative Mad Max timeline

Early to mid-1980s: War breaks out in the Middle East. Oil fields set ablaze. Conflict rapidly escalates to other countries, beginning World War III. As fighting intensifies, social and economic conditions in many parts of the world start to stagnate, with rising crime and violence. Main Force Patrol established.
1995: The Feral Kid is born.
1997: Events of MAD MAX. Australia's economy takes a nosedive; food, fuel and power shortages grow increasingly common, with mass riots breaking out in many cities. Government splinters.
Early 1999: World War III finally goes nuclear. Bombing of Canberra, leading to short nuclear winter. By this point, government is virtually non-existent and most cities have already been ransacked and abandoned. Captain Walker's plane crashes. In September, he disappears in the Wasteland.
2004: Outback grows increasingly inhospitable. Events of MAD MAX 2/THE ROAD WARRIOR.
2017: Events of MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME.
