I disagree. It is about the next era in American life, and I think it compliments the first film perfectly- It's just not as innocent as the first because the era it was set in was a MAJOR shift from the era before it.
I was eight years old in '62, but I had a sister five years older, and I used to wake up to her clock radio and rock and roll music of the early sixties, and I could see the world of the first film around me- so I could relate to the first film and that era-
but I was more like Andy and his generation- Vietnam and the military draft of that war hung over my own head for a good ten years, as the war dragged on and on, and I had to go through the draft registartion and lottery when I graduated high school in 1972-
By then, especially after the nightmare year of 1968, everything had changed- including the rock music and the world that kids were living in- The sequel might not be as tight or new as the first movie, but the more I see it, the more I appreciate it-
More American Graffiti was a very brave anti-establishment film to make, which I'm positive has hurt it's reception both then and still now.
