And truly tragically, it DOES follow the stories closely. I warn you, the ending is depressing on multiple levels, and it is almost an artistic REACTION to the innocence of the first one (intentional, considering George Lucas is still writing it and its only 6 years later). See it if you love the characters enough that you can't get enough of them, but be prepared for some radical changes in the dynamics, which you may or may not appreciate (I'm sure many will disagree with me here, but I did not, in all honesty) depending on what attracted you to the original (period piece vs Buelleresque innocence, character dynamics). I'm not saying its a BAD movie, it definitely has a preconceived purpose (which it executes) to illustrate the effect of the later half of the 60's on the former film's characters. Theres also a lot of humor and some wonderful music, but the overall tone is much, much darker and it doesn't really turn out "all right" except for a few characters (who are psychologically different than the originals, which is of course unavoidable since the whole point is to illustrate the effects of 60's on "normal" teenage archetypes with whom we have already connected.) For some people this will work very well, depending on their own aesthetic prefernce. Personally, I felt like I was watching my friends die (thats intentionally dramatic, but you get my point). As an above poster said, it jumps back and forth through 4 different New Year's Eves between virtually ALL of our original characters (I was impressed they got almost the whole cast onboard) in 4 different subplots. There is a degree of cynicism and nihilism however that I found very upsetting (this is where it kind of depends on why a person liked the original), though I've never been fond of wallowing in Vietnam angst in general....to me it was never really that romantic to begin with, more painful than exciting.
