Did anybody see this in the theater ?

Over the years, anybody I've met who has seen this movie either saw it on cable back in the day or on VCR/DVD. Did anybody actually see it in theater ? I know it didn't have a huge release.

Although filmed in the summer of 1978, this actually didn't hit theaters until 1981. and by then it was like a limited release. Kinda strange how by 1981 the film would kinda start look dated for it was so late 70's .

reply

I think I had already seen it on HBO by '81.

Yes, I saw this in a Seattle movie theater. It opened as the co-feature with the better known teen comedy LITTLE DARLINGS (Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol). I'm sorry to say that the audience didn't seem to like OVER THE EDGE, as several patrons walked out during the film. It apparently wasn't what the LITTLE DARLINGS audience wanted to see.

I first saw OTE back in the summer of 1979 at a theater in Chicago. I instantly loved it and it's anarchistic nature. But what really stood out for me was it's iconic music! You couldn't get any better than The Ramones, Cheap Trick and Van Halen at the time and fortunately the filmmakers knew it.

Me too. Cable was the only way to see it when it first came out. They never did a widespread release because of what happened when movies like the Warriors were shown in theaters.

reply

Yep, I saw it in a movie theater but I can't remember if it was in Detroit or in New York as I moved to NYC in June of '81. Several years later I saw it again in NYC as there was a special limited screening with the principal actors, screen writer & director at the first screening. I attended a later screening so I missed getting to meet the principals. By that time Vincent Spano & Matt Dillon had begun to make a name for themselves.

So, the screening with the actors was "several years after" June '81 ? That seems pretty late for a movie originally filmed in '79.

No, saint-21 is mistaken.

I definitely saw this in a movie theater in Hollywood sometime in 1979.

I subsequently watched it many, many times via over-the-air premium services like Select TV and/or ON TV.

This movie as well as "Bugsy Malone" had a great affected me growing up.

They empowered my 9 year old self to not take any crap from adults.
