Richie's attitude toward pot

I'm puzzled. Richie wears a belt buckle with a marijuana leaf on it, and he says that his mom's private stash in the car's ashtray will last a couple of days when he and Carl steal the vehicle. Yet when Cory pulls out a joint in the condo, Richie looks disgusted and says "I knew it -- out pops a number." Discuss.

reply

Sorry, English is not my native language, what does "out pops a number" mean?

reply

"Number" is slang for a marijuana cigarette, like a "joint". I didn't know this for a long time and when I did, I noticed it used in a lot of movies I'd seen.

Richie might have just liked the belt buckle.

I think he was fine with drugs, he just didn't like people who were wasted all the time. He commented that Corey was "too stoned to talk to" and stuff like that. Then when she pops out a joint, that just proved his point - all she wants to do is get wasted!

reply

Exactly. Much like in "Clueless" where Cher says (and I am paraphrasing), "It is fine to smoke a joint at a party, but it is quite another to spend all day stoned out of your mind."

When I woke up mom and dad were rolling on the couch,
Rolling numbers, rockin rollin, got my KISS records out.

I thought he was trying to say he shouldn't be surprised because he knew that Cory had a reputation for smoking pot frequently.

Back in the day from a distance an Adidas belt buckle looked a lot like a marijuana leaf. The '80s started to suck when belts got too skinny and buckles became too small.

I think we are seeing that Ritchie is actually quite mature and level-headed for his age. Yeah, he'll smoke a joint at a party on Saturday night, but he doesn't want or need to go through life high. His downfall wasn't his immaturity (as it was for most of the other characters) but rather his loyalty to his friends, particularly Carl.
