"Over The Edge" Coming to DVD in 2004!!!!

My source:
thedigitalbits.com posted the transcript of a live chat on the HTF
(Home Theater Forum) with Warner Home Video on Monday evening (3/8/04).

"Over The Edge" was asked about (if it was being released on DVD), and Warner Bros. representatives *confirmed* that it will
be coming out on DVD before year's end, and in 16x9 too!!!!!

Woohoo!!!

reply

hopefully they have some good features and not just the movie all by itself.

damn, this is the greatest thing thats happened to DVD ever. I'm gonna buy 3 copies. the breakfast club sucks!

reply

i was the one that posted that question at the HTF expecting another response of "no plans at this time", the previous years chat was much more negative so i hoped to at least let them know that people did indeed want this on DVD. i was SHOCKED when they said it was coming this year. this has always been #1 on my DVD wishlist and i cant wait.

i would kill to see a reunion with all the kids from the film. i have always been very curious as to what became of the ones that seemed to have disappeared.

reply

Any info on a release date or what if any special features will be included?

HEY DONT GET RID of your older vhs copies just yet however.
Their is quite a number of artist on the soundtrack/film and their is a strong chance Warner does not hold the rights to all of them anymore. What this results in (and has with other recent 80's dvds) is either substituiton or complete removal of particular songs from the film. Keep that in mind when you think about ditching that older vhs copy (although i doubt many of us would do that anyway)

reply

hmmm...this is some very useful info! Have you heard any more news about when it releases? 2004 is nearly at an end.

reply

To see a great interview, follow this link. It shows what happened to a lot of the kids, by interviewing the little blonde girl from the film:

Well, 2004 is getting close to over, and I see no DVD release yet. Anyone know of any firm data on when I can get hold of this?

reply

[deleted]

Well, here it is Dec. 13, 2004. Unless I have missed something ote still isn't out on dvd. any info?

reply

Obviously, it's not coming out in 2004. This info was bogus. :(

reply

I read the same interview on digitalbits.com. I don't think the info was bogus at the time, obviously something happened that held up the original plan. Perhaps they need more time to clear music rights, or maybe they want to get more input from the cast and crew for special features and the like. Don't be so pessimistic, worse, even less remembered films come out on dvd all the time.

reply

What is wrong with Warner Brothers? This film is a true cultural phenomenon. Can you think of a single movie that bridges the seventies and eighties so perfectly and has created an entire cult enterprise WITHOUT EVER BEING RELEASED IN THEATERS? "Over the Edge" is an American masterpiece and it not being released on DVD is a travesty on par with Rocky winning the Oscar over Raging Bull. Those suit monkeys at Warners had better wake up and smell the nostalgia. This movie means a lot to a lot of people and they are missing a huge opportunity.

I'm sorry, when I drink vodka i write things like phenomenon instead of phenomena... but you know what I mean. RELEASE THIS MOVIE ON DVD!!!!! and while I'm at it, why can't I get "Delicatessen" on DVD... the world is so unfair!!!!!!!!

reply

This bogus info. I was working on the cover re-design back in November 04.

I am the originator of the petition to get this on dvd http://www.petitiononline.com/bat115/petition.html

Well, it's March 1, where'd you hear / see that at? I'd like to preorder it if it had anything extra than the VHS...

I bought a bootlegged dvd of this film from ebay. As soon as i found out about this film on this site last week (whilst on Matt dillons profile as i am a BIG fan of him hes gorgeous!)..I instantly wanted the film and then saw that its only rarely available from America which i was particulary annoyed at since im from England, so i decided to look for the film on Ebay and i found a bootlegged copy of it for $7.00 ..so i begged my mum to buy me it and she finally gave in!..i wotched it yesterday and i LOVE it!!!it was exactly how good i thought it would be...such a fantastic film and it strangley reminds me of my town as i live in a planned community where thers nothing for us teenagers to do but drink,do drugs, vandalise ect..they where even supposed to be building a themepark in our town and 3 years later ive still never seen any sign of that happening! really reminds me of my own life so i can kinda relate to the teenagers in it.But what a great film...and it was actually a BRILLIANT bootleg copy of a film..by far the best ive ever seen of a film so old.

I bet the music rights are such a mess that this will never come out on DVD. Warner Brothers isn't going to pay (quite possibly) hundreds of thousands dollars to get the rights to the songs for a movie that (although awesome) is probably not going to be a big seller. Unless they change the music, which would definitely diminsh the movie to a degree that huge fans (like me) would be very disastisfied with the product. Maybe I am being a pessimist and this will eventually see the light of day, but I don't see it happening in the forseeable future.

reply

Sad and probably true.

I would buy it though. It was a very real movie for me and I could readily identify with the characters. I haven't seen it since the early 80s, but I remember being totally glued while it played. Would be nice to watch once in a while to bring back some memories of when I was pretty rebellious and the times in general.

reply

Could we not bump this thread anymore until there is actual news of the DVD? I keep getting my hopes crushed.

EDIT:

so you bumped it why?
Because I had a reason to. Let's not make this harder than it has to be, okay?

I saw over the edge 4 years ago on Film 4, the movie subscription channel and, recorded it!!!!! I'm afraid it ended up being one of those 'what happened to that tape'. Recently, I have got a tape transfer to dvd (from ebay) but this film so deserves a proper resolution. It could almost be Terry Malick at times, without the Heideggerian posturing. The print Film 4 used was very impressive. It would be excellent for it to get shown on regular t.v. Don't know if Film 4 have reshown it. Honestly, the amount of casual film programming on the BBC and Channel 4 is really dispiriting. Occasionally, you get something. But when was the last time they showed any Ozu, any Bresson, any Lubitsch, any Sirk? Anyway, before this gets anymore off-topic.

I bought a bootleg copy of this DVD on Ebay, and my copy was very choppy. Scenes in it were frozen, and a lot of crucial scenes in it were skipped altogether, due to the poor quality of the DVD. In order to view them, I had to go to the scene selection at the beginning and play them from there, and even then, they wouldn't play. I really hope this movie is legally released on DVD soon.
