Do people today still get as excited for sequels ?

I still get goose bumps today, when I rewatch the intro for Rocky II, when the caress between Rocky & Adrian fades into flashing lights and sirens to Bill Conti's ominous score...

ROCKY II (yellow font offset upper right of screen over Philadelphia docks)

It was sooooo exciting to know that we were going to watch the story continue, there's more Rocky!

So it raises the question, do people still get as excited today for sequels?

I realise back then I was a young kid, so everything seemed fresh and new, but movies back then were a touchstone of a time and place, much like TiK Tok videos are today (yikes).

So is the excitement still there for sequels, or has it 'transitioned' onto social media, where cynicism and narcissism have become the default position?

I'd love to think that new sequels & classic sequels still have the ability to make a kid giddy with excitement today.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR REPLIES, MUCH APPRECIATED :)

I think many people still get excited by the idea of a sequel to a movie they've enjoyed, but unfortunately Hollywood likes to drive a franchise into the ground with three, four or more sequels that inevitably drop in quality, leaving people jaded with it.

Thanks everyone for your replies, much appreciated. :)
It seems to be a split decision, very apt seen as it's a Rocky discussion.

I think if there's a story to tell then go for it, otherwise it's all about the $money.

Not that Stallone and the studio didn't like the money, but there was definitely a story arc, and I think perhaps ROCKY II is the most justified sequel of all time, given the nature of boxing and the inevitable rematch scenario.

I think people will always get excited for new films. As long as you have an entertaining spectacle with a story and something to draw people in, then it's all good.

However, back then when they made truly great films like the Rocky series, I can imagine they got even more excited to levels you don't get anymore. The teaser trailer for Rocky IV is incredible, I'm sure audiences went crazy for that.

Yes, that was the only Rocky movie I went to see in the cinema.

Lucky guy! I read that people were cheering and jumping out their seats during the end fight, as if it was all real haha. I'd have loved to have seen that.

I'm a Brit. There may have been some 'light applause' 😊

reply

Yeah, if you thought the original was terrific.

I've got one sequel I'm very excited about.....

"The Accountant Part 2"

This is the follow up to the 2016 flick which starred Ben Affleck.

From what I've read, Part 2 is filming right now. All of the original people (stars, writer, director) are returning.

Looking forward to it.

The ACCOUNTANT 2 is definitely one I'm looking forward to as it looks to be planned as a Trilogy and if that's true and the 2nd one focuses on the brother more than I bet Braxton gets killed in the 2nd one and in the 3rd movie, Christian Wolff goes full Terminator over it with one of those elaborate guns he used in the 1st movie in each hand.. 🤔

reply

They're talking about a trilogy - but who knows? LOL

They started talking "Accountant part 2" in 2017. It literally took 7 years to get it together.

The only thing we know for sure is Part 2 is on the way, no doubt about it.

I'd be willing to venture it'll be very good, based on everyone coming back. Plus, IMO, part 1 begged for a sequel. Everyone survives (aside from Lithgow). The Accountant leaves town, fully healthy, ready for the next adventure. From there, you can take the story anywhere you like.

Will there be a part 3??? We'll see.....

reply

Well, the synopsis for the 2nd film involves Melinda's former boss being murdered and she hires Braxton Security INC for their assistance in solving the crime and I'm sure along the way, chaos ensues

reply

Hey thanks, I had no idea what the synopsis was for part 2.

That sounds really interesting.

I wonder how JK Simmons will fit in - he was on his way out (retirement) during Part 1.

Unless of course he is the former boss that gets killed.

Also, wonder what Christian's name will be this time.

No man.
The thrill is gone.

Nobody gives a fuck anymore. Stallone mastered the sequel idea in his career.
It's actually back then that the concept was mastered in Hollywood.

Nowadays, 40 years later, it's abused as every fucking movie has a sequel. It's not only expected, it's sure.
If anything, most of the times the only surprise it's a "they are making a sequel to THAT?!?!" situation.
But mostly, it's just assumed.
And certainly, as thrilling as a new McDonalds: Wow! I wonder what they will serve in there!!!!

reply

It seems that most movies today are planned with the idea of a trilogy in mind from the start. So, there's nothing to really get excited about. It's just expected.

reply

It was exciting back then because we didn't have social media as we see it to ruin the surprise like now in 2024
