Steal a car?

Why didn't they just steal a couple of cars and drive back to Coney Island?

reply

Or why didn't they just take a cab home? Even if they didn't have the money they could have just mugged a couple folks.

Another option would have been to call some of the others members of their gang back home to come pick them up.....surely at least one or more of them must have had a car or parents with them.

But hey.....it is a movie after all. The strongest point on why not any of those is that the Warriors don't even realize that they are the target of all the chaos until the Lizzies tell them. Before that, they might have just thought they could make it through.

well maybe they didn't know how to drive home. Don't kid yourself its easy to get lost when you never been anywhere
I don't think they would of made it with a car
cab what cab is stopping where they were
they didn't realize people were after them because without the truce this would of probably happen anyway

reply

Because the movie would have sucked as a road flick. I preferred waiting the four years for "National Lampoon's Vacation".

You're assuming that they know how to work a car. This isn't LA it's NYC. Many New Yorkers don't even know how to drive. Spike Lee has actually never learned how to drive. He was raised in Brooklyn.

reply

I think at the beginning of the movie Swan says "We aint never been to the Bronx before." They wouldn't know where to drive. They would've gotten lost.
Also, Rembrandt was the only one who seemed to know how to read the subway maps.

reply

Why was going to the Bronx such a big deal? It was another borough, not another state. And it was accessible by mass transit. I guess none of those guys had ever been to Yankee Stadium or the Bronx Zoo.

reply

They were kids who had mostly never been outside of Coney Island. Rembrantd seemed to be the only one who could read the subway map outside of Brooklyn.

They probably knew the subway well enough, and it's likely they would have made a trip or two to the Bronx, perhaps to Yankee Stadium or a field trip to the Bronx Zoo. (That would have been interesting to have the Warriors end up at the zoo.)

But maybe Swan meant that they had never gone up there as the Warriors, and they probably never had any direct dealings with any of the gangs up there.

As to the OP's question, even if they could drive and steal a car, that doesn't mean they'd have a detailed street map or GPS that could guide them home. They probably knew every street, every alley, every nook and cranny in their own territory, but in other areas, they might only know the major thoroughfares, not the side streets. I know this even in my own city, as there are some areas of town I don't go to very often, and it's easy to get turned around and possibly lost.

You are absolutely right. Data from the 2000 U.S. Census reveals that New York is the only locality in the United States where more than half of all households do not own a car. While nearly 90 percent of Americans drive to their jobs, mass transit is the primary form of travel for New Yorkers.

reply

I think all the salient point have been mentioned: they weren't desperate to escape, they were out of their territory and knew the train would get them home, and proud of their colors and confident in their abilities. I had the same thoughts, get out of town fast and quietly, disguised and safe, but the Warriors are neither "wimps" nor aware of the scope of their problem. The viewer's perspective doesn't apply.

reply

Or just take off their vests and put on some T-Shirts; they would have blended right in. But then the movie would have been over in 15 minutes.

I am with you; in the "real world" they would have took off their colors to save their butts. BUT that would have made a very short, boring movie. :)
