Better than I remembered

I'd not watched the film since the '80s and at that time I was a bit grumpy with the liberties they'd taken with the book. But seen again when the impression and great detail of the book, which I liked very much at the time, has faded it seems a better film. I thought Walked was good, especially at the end where he storms through the residence with his killing face on. The the intensity of his character in those scenes explains why he follows the mercenary profession.
It was also nice to notice actors like Jim Broadband and Victoria Tennant in such early roles.

I just watched it again for the first time in more than 20 years. An excellent film.

It's not something I appreciated greatly until the DVD age, being a little light in the action department for me when I was younger, but it's now firmly one of the more re-watchable movies in my sizeable collection, one of my go to films and I watch it several times a year.

Though on the whole it may not be a great movie artistically or production value wise, the story, characters and some of the scenes and lines are pretty memorable and I think excellent storytelling.

A criticism I've seen on here is that it takes a complex story and simplifies it or ruins it, but on the contrary, I think it does pretty well to trim it down and into film length. It's pretty underrated and under appreciated in my opinion. I personally rate it an 8 or 9 as a personal preference, but really think it's at least worthy of a seven point something. Unfortunately it's just not to a lot of peoples' tastes.

I agree.

The film may have been negatively impacted be post-production editing. Drew's character (Tom Berenger) was supposed to be in the movie more and many of his scenes were cut out. I don't know all the details but Tom Berenger was not happy that many of his scenes were left on the cutting room floor.

Still Drew is effective as a thrill-seeking merc.

A good action movie.

This movie was just about the first entry in my list of "Undiscovered Cult Favorites". It's the first one that I can rember taking note of Christopher Walken, too. When I still had conventional TV, I'd watch it every time I saw it in the listings, and it never seemed to get old.

Sounds like a fun list to read!!
Can i see it somewhere, on another site or blog perhaps??
Also totally agree with your opinion of this winner
Walken is quite simply a living legend
I read the book twice and quite enjoyed it as well
Very nice to meet you...great post

Unfortunately, if it was ever written down online somewhere, I lost track of its location. But, there weren't that many entries in it, and from memory I can provide most:

13th Warrior - Anthony Banderas
Blood of Heroes - Rutger Hauer
King of Hearts - Alan Bates
Harold and Maude - Ruth Gordon, Bud Cort
The Legend of 1900 - Tim Roth
Angel-A - Jamel Debbouze, Rie Rasmussen (French with English captions)

There were probably a few more, if they come to mind, I'll update the list. Happy viewing!

Much obliged
I saw 13th, Harold and Blood...good stuff (the fact that Hauer isnt a household name here in the US confounds me...i consider him a favorite and Blood of Heroes was right in his wheelhouse...a fine underappreciated action guy)
Ill look for the others
Thx!
